Heavy snow collapses roofs | |
| MID-HUDSON – Three partial building collapses, from heavy snow, happened in the Town of Clarkstown. Another partial collapse occurred in Highland Falls and another in Warwick. A commercial building at 208 North Clinton Street in Poughkeepsie collapsed Friday night. With the pileup of heavy snow, people should look to keep their roofs clean, said Sullivan County Emergency Services Commissioner Richard Martinkovic. “If they have quite accumulation, they should try to make some arrangement to get some of that snow off the roofs, especially if it is an older structure, but to do it in a safe way,” Martinkovic said. “If you have to get up there, you have to make sure you are properly supported and you have the right tools so you can slide the snow off because the quicker and easier you do it, the safer you will be personally, but more importantly you will protect your home or your storage building so you don’t have a collapse.” Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, a partial collapse occurred at West Rock Tennis at 21 Pralle Street in Nanuet. The building was unoccupied and closed for business at the time. Police said two maintenance workers present in a different portion of the building were not injured during the collapse. The collapse possibly ruptured a gas line causing a small fire in the rear portion of the building. Fire departments from Nanuet and West Nyack responded to the scene along with the Clarkstown fire and building inspectors. Fire Inspector Harold Straut indicated the collapse may have been caused by the weight of the snow and rain. At 6:50 a.m. Friday, Clarkstown Police responded to a roof collapse at 67 North Grand Avenue in Congers. The building is a detached garage. No injuries were sustained during the collapse. Also at around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, police responded to Capasso & Sons at `42 North Route 9W in Congers for a partial building collapse. Congers Fire Department responded to the scene for a smell of gas. No injuries were sustained during that collapse as well. A Clarkstown building inspector will inspect both of those collapses as well. At 25 Mountain Avenue in Highland Falls Friday morning, a partial roof collapse occurred on a porch attached to a house. Three people were inside at the time; none was injured. Also on Thursday night, a section of a large roof on a 25 foot by 30 foot structure collapsed. There were no injuries.
